Understanding Vertigo and Dizziness Symptoms

Vertigo is more than just a passing sensation of dizziness. It often feels like the room is spinning or tilting, even when standing still. Some people experience a sense of being pulled to one side, a rocking sensation, or even loss of balance. These sensations can be brief or persist for hours, and may occur alongside nausea, vomiting, hearing changes, ear pressure, or eye movement disturbances.

At Audiocare, we understand that vertigo can severely disrupt daily life — from driving to walking confidently or simply enjoying a peaceful moment. Our ENT professionals are trained to carefully evaluate and identify the underlying cause of your symptoms, offering clarity and a clinical pathway towards relief.

What Causes Vertigo and Balance Disorders?

Vertigo typically arises from a disturbance in the vestibular system — the part of the inner ear and brain that controls balance and spatial orientation. The most common causes include:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Often triggered by changes in head position, caused by loose crystals in the inner ear.
  • Vestibular Neuritis: A viral infection of the vestibular nerve, causing sudden, intense vertigo without hearing loss.
  • Ménière’s Disease: Characterised by episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a feeling of fullness in the ear, due to fluid imbalance in the inner ear.
  • Labyrinthitis: Inflammation affecting both the vestibular and auditory portions of the inner ear, usually with vertigo and hearing loss.
  • Migraine-Associated Vertigo: Vertigo occurring with or without a headache in patients prone to migraines.
  • Acoustic Neuroma: A rare, non-cancerous tumour on the hearing and balance nerve, requiring imaging for diagnosis.

Sometimes, dizziness has non-vestibular causes such as cardiovascular disorders, anxiety, medication side effects or low blood pressure. That is why a comprehensive ENT assessment is essential.

Precise ENT diagnosis helps stabilise your sense of balance and reduces dizziness episodes—so you can move with confidence again.

What to Expect During a Vertigo Consultation at Audiocare

Our diagnostic process begins with a detailed medical history, where we explore the nature, duration and triggers of your symptoms. We also ask about associated signs such as hearing loss, tinnitus or visual disturbances.

You will undergo a thorough ENT examination, including inspection of the ears and assessment of eye movements to detect signs of nystagmus (involuntary eye motion associated with vestibular disorders).

Where needed, we perform:

  1. Audiological Testing: To assess your hearing and identify any patterns linked with inner ear disorders.
  2. Balance Tests: These may include positional manoeuvres (such as the Dix-Hallpike test) to provoke and observe vertigo episodes in a safe and controlled setting.
  3. Tympanometry and Acoustic Reflex Testing: To evaluate middle ear function and detect subtle inner ear issues.
  4. If clinically indicated, we may recommend imaging such as MRI to rule out rare structural causes, or refer for vestibular rehabilitation therapy tailored to your diagnosis.

When Should You Seek an ENT Evaluation for Vertigo?

While occasional light-headedness is common and often benign, it’s important to consult an ENT specialist if you experience:

  • Sudden, intense or recurrent vertigo episodes
  • Vertigo with hearing loss, tinnitus or ear fullness
  • Dizziness lasting longer than a few minutes
  • Balance problems affecting daily function or increasing fall risk
  • Vertigo triggered by head movements
  • Blurred vision or coordination issues
  • Uncertainty about the cause of symptoms

Early diagnosis can prevent complications and reduce unnecessary suffering. Audiocare offers a calm, professional space to investigate your symptoms with respect and scientific rigour.

Our Approach

01

Initial Consultation

At first, an anamnesis is carried out by a health professional with the patient, which is intended to be an initial point in the diagnosis.

02

Diagnosis

Primary and complementary tests are carried out to diagnose the type of hearing loss that will explain why it is difficult to hear.

03

Recommendation

According to the results of these tests, if hearing loss is proven, a hearing aid will be recommended, which may vary in type and model.

Professional Advice

Hearing function is assessed using numerous subjective and objective tests that provide information on the patient's peripheral and central hearing.

FAQ

Whether you’re exploring our bespoke services, our approach, or how we can elevate your hearing experience, here are answers to the questions we’re asked most often.

Vertigo often feels like the room is spinning or tilting, even when you’re still. Some people describe it as a strong pull to one side, dizziness with movement, or a sensation of swaying as if on a boat.

While vertigo is often caused by benign inner ear conditions like BPPV or vestibular neuritis, it can occasionally signal more serious issues. That’s why a proper ENT evaluation is essential to rule out neurological or structural causes.

Our ENT specialists begin with a detailed history and physical examination, followed by audiological and vestibular tests when needed. We look for clear clinical patterns and use targeted assessments to identify the origin of symptoms.

Yes, many causes of vertigo respond well to specific treatments. For example, BPPV can often be resolved with repositioning manoeuvres. Others may require medication, therapy, or further medical referral depending on the diagnosis.

Yes. Intermittent vertigo can still signal an underlying issue that may worsen over time. Early diagnosis helps ensure proper management and can prevent unnecessary anxiety or progression of symptoms.
