Understanding Ear, Nose and Throat Conditions

Ear, nose and throat (ENT) conditions encompass a wide range of ailments that can affect your breathing, hearing and overall comfort. Common examples include sinusitis (sinus infections causing facial pressure and congestion), rhinitis (nasal inflammation such as hay fever), pharyngitis (sore throat), tonsillitis (inflamed tonsils), otitis (ear infection), and structural issues like a deviated nasal septum (a bent cartilage in the nose). These conditions might arise from infections (viral or bacterial), allergies, or anatomical problems, and they can significantly impact your quality of life. You may experience symptoms like a blocked or runny nose, sinus pressure headaches, ear pain or muffled hearing, throat pain when swallowing, voice changes, dizziness or swollen glands. While some ENT issues are mild and temporary, others can linger or recur and shouldn’t be ignored – especially if they cause ongoing discomfort or disrupt daily activities.

If left unaddressed, certain ENT conditions can lead to complications or chronic problems. For instance, untreated sinus infections occasionally spread or become persistent, and frequent middle-ear infections might affect hearing over time. Chronic nasal blockage from allergies or a deviated septum can disturb sleep and smell, and recurrent throat infections may result in abscesses or the need for surgical removal of tonsils. Beyond the physical discomfort, these problems can also make it harder to enjoy conversations, meals or outdoor activities. The good news is that most ENT ailments are very treatable with proper care. Understanding the importance of timely evaluation is key: prompt treatment can relieve your symptoms, prevent complications and help avoid any long-term effects on your hearing or general health.

Symptoms – When to Seek Help: It’s wise to consider professional ENT evaluation if you have persistent, severe or frequent symptoms. For example, a “cold” that lasts more than 10 days or one that improves then gets worse could indicate sinusitis requiring medical care. Likewise, facial pain and thick nasal discharge that won’t resolve, or nasal congestion that is present even outside of a common cold, merit attention. Seek help for an earache with fever or hearing loss, any ringing or fullness in the ears that lasts beyond a day or two, or dizziness accompanying ear symptoms. A sore throat that does not improve after a week, or that makes swallowing or breathing difficult at any point, should be checked by a doctor. Repeated bouts of tonsillitis (for instance, several times in one year) or constantly swollen neck glands are also a reason to consult an ENT specialist. Additionally, if you find yourself relying on over-the-counter nasal sprays or painkillers for weeks on end, or if you’ve noticed changes like a persistent hoarse voice or a lump in the throat, it’s important to get evaluated. Early assessment and treatment of ENT conditions ensure you get the right relief and avoid any issue “snowballing” into something more serious. Remember – you don’t have to simply put up with ongoing sinus pressure, blocked ears or throat pain. Professional care can pinpoint the cause and set you on the path to feeling well again.

Why Choose AudioCare?

At AudioCare, we adopt a gentle, patient-centred approach to every ENT concern. During your first consultation, our ENT specialist takes the time to listen closely to your symptoms and health history – whether you’re bothered by sinus headaches, a recurring sore throat, or muffled hearing. We’ll ask detailed questions about your experience, such as how long you’ve had the issue, what triggers or relieves it, and how it’s affecting your daily life. This thorough anamnesis helps us understand the full picture. Next comes a comprehensive examination of your ears, nose and throat. Using specialised tools and bright illumination, we carefully inspect each area: we’ll look up your nasal passages for blockage, swelling, or polyps; check your throat and tonsils for inflammation; and examine your ears (including the eardrums) for fluid, infection or wax build-up. If needed, we can perform certain diagnostic tests on the spot – for example, a hearing test if you’re experiencing hearing changes, or a nasal endoscopy (a thin camera) to get a clearer view inside your nasal cavities. Throughout the evaluation, we explain our findings in plain English, ensuring you understand what is happening and why. We know many of our clients are foreign residents in the Algarve who appreciate clear, jargon-free explanations, so we make sure nothing is lost in translation. You’ll be fully informed about your condition and the recommended next steps.

When it comes to treatment, AudioCare’s philosophy is to combine proven medical solutions with a caring, conservative touch. In many cases, ENT conditions can be managed successfully with medications and simple procedures. We typically start with the most effective yet least invasive options. For a bacterial infection (for example, a severe sinusitis or a case of strep tonsillitis), we may prescribe an appropriate course of antibiotics – but only when truly necessary, as we avoid antibiotics for viral infections that will clear on their own. We’ll provide guidance on supportive care too: nasal saline rinses or steam inhalation to help clear congested sinuses, decongestant or steroid nasal sprays to reduce nasal swelling (very useful for chronic rhinitis or sinusitis), and pain relievers or throat lozenges to keep you comfortable. If you’re suffering from allergy-related ENT problems, we can recommend modern antihistamines or nasal corticosteroid sprays to control the allergic inflammation. For ear infections, we may gently clean the ear if there’s discharge and use either oral antibiotics or eardrops, along with advising on pain relief and techniques to keep the middle ear ventilated (like nasal decongestants or the simple “pinch-your-nose-and-blow” method to pop your ears). Our ENT specialist individualises the treatment plan to your specific needs – for instance, some patients with recurring sinus issues might benefit from a short course of a steroid to calm severe inflammation, whereas another patient might need guidance on acid reflux management if that’s irritating their throat. Rest assured, we aim to tackle the root cause of your problem, not just the symptoms, so you can get lasting relief.

One of the advantages of seeking help at AudioCare is our holistic perspective on ear, nose and throat health. Because our clinic specialises in both ENT and audiology, we consider how these systems are interconnected. For example, if you come in with chronic nasal congestion and we find it’s affecting your ears (perhaps causing fluid build-up or Eustachian tube blockage), our treatment will address both areas – clearing your nose to ultimately clear your ears and improve your hearing. If you use hearing aids, we’re mindful that ear infections or heavy congestion can impact how well you hear with your devices; by treating the underlying ENT issue, we also help ensure your hearing aids work optimally. We keep detailed clinical records of your visits and progress, so over time we can spot patterns – perhaps you get sinusitis every winter, or your throat flares up whenever you travel – and proactively adjust your care to prevent recurrences. Continuity of care is a priority for us: you’ll often see the same specialist, who knows your history and can build on what’s worked for you before. We also take into account any other health conditions or medications you have, especially as many of our patients are older adults. Our specialist will check that any new treatment we prescribe won’t conflict with your existing medications and is appropriate for your health status. Your safety is paramount, and we tailor our recommendations to you as an individual – for example, opting for a gentler nasal spray regimen if you have high blood pressure, or choosing ear drops that are safe if you’ve had ear surgery in the past.

Crucially, AudioCare provides guidance on next steps if advanced care is needed. Should we discover during your evaluation that your condition would be best served by a surgical intervention (for instance, a significantly deviated septum causing breathing trouble, or tonsils that repeatedly get infected), we will discuss this with you in detail. We don’t perform major surgeries in-clinic, but we coordinate referrals to reputable ENT surgeons and hospitals if necessary, ensuring you’re in good hands. If, say, you might benefit from a septoplasty (surgery to straighten the nasal septum) or a tonsillectomy, we’ll explain the pros and cons and help you make an informed decision. And even if you do go for surgery, our care doesn’t stop there – we’ll be available for your pre-operative and post-operative support, helping with follow-up checks, ear or hearing tests afterwards, and any continuing care you might need as you recover. By choosing AudioCare, you are assured of compassionate, expert care every step of the way. We never rush our consultations, so you’ll have plenty of time to ask questions and voice concerns. Our goal is not only to relieve your current discomfort but also to give you peace of mind. You’ll leave our clinic knowing that no issue has been overlooked – if there’s an underlying allergy, polyp or other factor contributing to your troubles, we will have identified it and factored it into your plan. With AudioCare’s ENT service, you can feel confident that you’re doing everything possible to stay healthy and enjoy life unencumbered by ear, nose or throat problems.

Our Approach

01

Initial Consultation

At first, an anamnesis is carried out by a health professional with the patient, which is intended to be an initial point in the diagnosis.

02

Diagnosis

Primary and complementary tests are carried out to diagnose the type of hearing loss that will explain why it is difficult to hear.

03

Recommendation

According to the results of these tests, if hearing loss is proven, a hearing aid will be recommended, which may vary in type and model.

Professional Advice

Hearing function is assessed using numerous subjective and objective tests that provide information on the patient's peripheral and central hearing.

FAQ

Whether you’re exploring our bespoke services, our approach, or how we can elevate your hearing experience, here are answers to the questions we’re asked most often.

If you have typical cold symptoms (like a runny nose and congestion) that start to improve within a week, it’s likely just a viral cold and will resolve on its own. However, signs that a sinus infection may need medical attention include symptoms lasting longer than 10 days without improvement, or symptoms that were getting better but then worsen again, which could indicate a secondary bacterial infection. Severe symptoms – such as intense facial pain and pressure, high fever (over ~38°C), or very thick yellow/green nasal discharge – are also red flags. These suggest it’s time to see a doctor. At AudioCare, we can examine your nasal passages and, if needed, perform a sinus evaluation to determine if you require treatment like antibiotics or a nasal spray. If it’s a mild case, we might recommend supportive care at home (like saline rinses, steam inhalation and decongestants) and watching for improvement. But if your sinus pain is really debilitating, disrupting your sleep, or accompanied by things like blurred vision or swelling around the eyes, you should seek care promptly. Our ENT specialist will distinguish between a stubborn cold and a true sinus infection, so you get the right treatment and relief.

Most sore throats, including tonsillitis, are caused by common viruses and tend to get better within a week on their own. You don’t need to rush to a doctor for every tickle in the throat. However, you should seek medical advice if your sore throat is extremely painful, lasts longer than about a week, or keeps coming back repeatedly. Warning signs include: difficulty swallowing or opening your mouth, a fever over 38°C that isn’t coming down, swollen tonsils with white patches (which could indicate a bacterial infection like strep), or any time you’re so unwell that you’re dehydrated or very fatigued. Also, if you feel a lump in your neck or have one tonsil much more swollen than the other, those are reasons to get checked. At AudioCare, we can perform a quick evaluation – including a throat examination and possibly a strep test – to see if it’s a bacterial tonsillitis that might need antibiotics. We’ll also look for complications like a peritonsillar abscess (a pocket of pus next to a tonsil, which causes severe one-sided throat pain and difficulty swallowing). If you or a loved one (especially in the case of children) experiences any breathing difficulty, drooling, or a “hot potato” muffled voice, that’s urgent and you should seek immediate care. In summary, if a throat infection is unusually severe, not improving, or frequently recurring, it’s time to let our ENT specialist assess it. We’ll ensure you get the proper treatment – whether it’s medication or, in very stubborn recurrent cases, a discussion about whether a tonsillectomy is an option – to put an end to your worries.

Yes, absolutely – ear, nose and throat issues often connect to hearing. For example, a middle-ear infection can cause a temporary hearing loss in the affected ear. This happens because fluid builds up behind the eardrum and dampens its movement, so sounds become muffled. The good news is that once the infection clears and the fluid drains (or is removed), your hearing usually returns to normal. Similarly, chronic sinus congestion or allergic rhinitis can lead to blockage of the Eustachian tubes (the small passageways that equalise ear pressure). When these tubes get clogged from inflammation or mucus, you might feel fullness in the ears and notice your hearing is dulled or that sounds are “far away.” Treating the nasal congestion – for instance with decongestant sprays or allergy medications – often lets the ears pop open and hearing improves. Even wax build-up (which is more of an ear issue) can cause noticeable hearing loss, especially in older people or hearing aid users, and removing the wax will immediately help. At AudioCare, our specialist always checks if your hearing is being affected by an ENT condition. We might do a quick hearing test or use an otoscope to see your eardrum. The important thing is that most hearing changes from infections or congestion are temporary. Once we treat the underlying problem (be it an infection, allergy, or blockage), your hearing should bounce back. We’ll also ensure there isn’t another cause for any hearing loss. If we clear your ears and treat your sinus issues but you still have difficulty hearing, we can then investigate further or offer audiological solutions. In summary, ENT problems can cause muffled hearing, but with proper care this is usually reversible – and we’ll guide you through that process so you can hear clearly again.

AudioCare offers a comprehensive range of treatments for ear, nose and throat issues, all delivered with a gentle touch. After diagnosing your condition, our ENT specialist will recommend the appropriate management tailored to you. We can prescribe medications such as antibiotics for bacterial infections (for example, a confirmed bacterial sinusitis or tonsillitis), or antiviral and antifungal treatments where appropriate. We also frequently use topical treatments: for nasal issues, this may include nasal corticosteroid sprays or antihistamine sprays to reduce inflammation and congestion; for ear problems, we have eardrops to treat infections or soften wax. If you’re dealing with an allergy-based condition, we can provide modern, non-drowsy antihistamine tablets and advise on preventative measures. Many treatments are simple in-office procedures – for instance, if you have impacted earwax causing discomfort, we offer professional ear wax removal (using microsuction or other safe methods) right here at the clinic. This instantly relieves blockages and improves hearing. For nasal congestion issues, we can perform a gentle nasal endoscopy to suction out thick mucus or examine the sinuses, which not only helps relieve pressure but also obtains samples for culture if needed. In cases of recurrent sinus infections or chronic nasal polyps, we work with you on long-term management plans, including medication regimens and referrals for surgery if needed. Another service we provide is allergy testing coordination – if we suspect your ENT symptoms are allergy-driven, we can arrange skin prick or blood tests to identify triggers and then offer treatments like immunotherapy in collaboration with allergy specialists. We also take care of follow-up and rehabilitation: for example, after an ear infection, we can test your hearing to ensure it’s back to normal. Or if you’ve had surgery elsewhere (say, sinus surgery or a septoplasty), we can handle the aftercare, like removing nasal packs or monitoring the healing. Essentially, AudioCare is equipped to manage most ENT conditions medically right in our clinic. And for those issues that do require an operation or specialised intervention, we will refer you to a trusted ENT surgeon and work closely to support you before and after that treatment. Our aim is that you won’t have to bounce around different providers – we strive to be your one-stop solution for ENT care, coordinating everything from diagnosis to treatment and ongoing care.

In many cases, no – surgery is often a last resort after we’ve tried other treatments. Most common ENT conditions (like sinusitis, ear infections, and sore throats) can be successfully treated with medications, lifestyle changes and minimally invasive procedures. For example, a deviated septum can sometimes be managed in the short term with nasal sprays to reduce swelling, and chronic tonsillitis can often be controlled with prompt antibiotics and preventive measures. We only consider referring you for surgery if it’s truly necessary – such as if you have a structural problem or a condition that simply doesn’t improve with conservative care. Situations where surgery might be recommended include a severely deviated nasal septum that is causing constant breathing difficulty or sinus infections (since only an operation can physically straighten the septum), recurrent tonsillitis (if you’re getting tonsil infections many times a year and they’re impacting your well-being), or chronic sinusitis with polyps that hasn’t responded to medicine. If that point comes, the team at AudioCare will have a thorough discussion with you. We’ll explain what the surgical option involves, the benefits and risks, and answer all your questions to help you make an informed decision. Importantly, we will also facilitate a referral to an excellent ENT surgeon and ensure that you feel supported throughout the process. If you do undergo surgery (for instance, a septoplasty or a tonsillectomy), we’re here for your pre- and post-operative care – that means helping you prepare (e.g. adjusting any medications beforehand, explaining the procedure) and doing follow-up checks after surgery to monitor healing and handle any concerns. We understand that the idea of surgery can be daunting, especially for older patients or those living abroad without family nearby, which is why we take extra care to provide guidance and reassurance. Remember, our primary goal is to get you well without surgery if at all possible. We exhaust all effective non-surgical treatments first. In fact, many of our patients find significant relief through medication plans, therapy and lifestyle tweaks alone. But if an operation ultimately is the best path, you’ll be in capable hands – and we’ll be with you every step of the way, ensuring continuity of care. In short, you will only need surgery if there’s no better alternative, and we’ll make sure that decision is clear, comfortable and leads to the best outcome for your health.
